"Ideology between City and Countryside: Case-Study Constantinople and the Provinces" - Yannis Stouraitis
The FWF-Project on the ideology of the 'subaltern' in Byzantine society (7th–12th c.)” focuses on the issue of assimilation and discrepancy as regards the relationship between the provincial masses and the dominant ideology of the imperial power of Constantinople. For this research topic, the analytical juxtaposition of city and countryside is of central importance. Ideology is here understood as the product of a process of continuous negotiation between the reigning city (Constantinople), as the source of the dominant imperial ideology and culture, and a broader countryside (provinces) where dominant conceptions are confronted with diverse ideas, micro-cultures and needs within the framework of a dynamic dialectic that needs to be scrutinized. The current paper deals with methodological problems regarding the nature of textual material and suggests a certain theoretical perspective that may help to overcome them.
